Yesterday was Diggin Sunday + Color Your Troubles Away. It was a much needed reprieve from the chaos around us. Having the chance to hang out with folks at Tribal Cafe while we listened to music, colored & crafted, ate delicious bowls and sandwiches was a healing afternoon.

Women's March LA

1/23/2017

This past Saturday we joined our fellow Angelenos and convened on Downtown Los Angeles for the Women's March. To be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to attend this march. Leading up to Saturday many friends had been making plans to march. There was even sign making station at a potluck party that we go to every January.  These conversations were happening around me and yet I did not know if I would go.

What changed for me was the inauguration. I had been so wrapped up in figuring out how to the latest episode of This Filipino American Life (Episode 8: Did you eat yet?) that I was able to ignore all the news. But then the memes began to flood my feed and it became unavoidable. Cheeto Prezidon't Voldemort ignored his wife, said an oath, and began an attempt at governance.

I have been operating with a low key sense of dread. It's an awful feeling that I am constantly combatting and am being vigilant to give myself space for self care before I fall into a manic state of depression. This is not me being overly dramatic. As I have written in the past about my battles with depression.

Being at the Women's March lifted my spirits. There were times where folks made it known that this was their first march where I wondered "where were you before?" This city has had numerous marches for immigration, black lives matter, and Filipino American Veterans. I will remain hopeful that folks who attended these marches take next steps to do work.

The artist who organized this choir at the Washington DC march is MILCK. Also known as Connie Kimberly Lim, an artist that has played at Tuesday Night Cafe a number of times. Whenever she would grace the stage her songs would make me tear up. Her song "Quiet" is now the soundtrack to Women's Marches across the globe. When this video first made the rounds it gave me chills. Then I slowly realized that the woman leading the choir looked familiar and through a cursory search of Facebook posts it confirmed that it in fact is Connie.

You can buy the EP this song is on through bandcamp. I highly encourage you to pick up this EP! MILCK QUIET
There is work to be done. There will always be work to be done. Valerie Kaur gave an amazing speech that puts into words the hope I am trying to carry with me.

"What if this darkness is not the darkness of the tomb – but the darkness of the womb?"

Need a distraction from the current presidential news cycle? Take a listen to the latest episode of This Filipino American Life! We talk food with Sarahlynn Pablo of Filipino Kitchen!

I share more stories about how my family lied to me about certain Filipino foods. And by lied I mean push their preferences for Sinigang made with fish (yuck) and Tortang Talong not being made with ground beef (double yuck).

2017 Dreams

1/4/2017

It's the first week of a new year and like clockwork I am congested and mucusy. I thought my regimen of lemon honey water would keep my immune system up. Unfortunately my temperature sensitive body could not handle our Los Angeles winter which consists of having temperatures go from 75 degrees to 49 degrees in a day.

Presently my voice sounds like a kid going through puberty. Yup I sound like Peter Brady singing "Time To Change."
On January 1st I continued the tradition of creating a mind map that sets out the goals for 2017. Whenever I do this exercise a theme organically comes about. This year's theme is GET SHIT DONE.

2016 was a dumpster fire of a year, however there were some notable moments personally. I became a godmother again to my adorable niece EC. She has resting bitch face down already. EC is a valley girl through and through.

Color Your Troubles Away had a good run. I'm taking a break from it. I don't think it's gone forever. It will make comebacks in 2017. This time around it won't be monthly, but intentional and with collaboration and purpose.

Through This Filipino American Life we've done amazing things. I could not be prouder of the work we've done on this show. I am so thankful for valley twin Joe for inviting me to collaborate with him on this project. Talking to Deedee Magno Hall was a dream come true. 12 year old Elaine could not contain her excitement. You can hear it here on our special end of the year bonus episode!

With Tsismis Council we began our Short Flags Documentary journey. I cannot wait to continue with this project. I am so excited to meet the Filipino American women and men who are a part of this sport. Creating a venue to share those stories is a part of my 2017 goals.

Work that flag! #shortflags #pepflags #fpac25 #samutsari

I have always been a bookworm. My goal last year was 50 books. I scrambled to complete the task. This year the goal is 52 books. That breaks down to a book a week. Crossing my fingers that this gets done this year. I've signed up for a couple of book clubs, so hopefully they get me to my goal!

This year has started out quite musical. On our donation run I foundthis. Then on my 2nd day back at work I've had Dashboard Confessional playing on Spotify. And then my puppy wall calendar came in at work. 12 months of puppy awesomeness is going to greet me Monday through Friday.

2017 dreams are pretty sweet so far. Let's do this. Get Shit Done everyone!
