On Oblivious Birthday Gratitude Day 4 I am thankful for road trips. A tradition that Mike and I have continued. We have driven up and down California in a quest for National Parks stamps in our National Parks Passports. Now that Mike has a jeep, I foresee more road trips in our future and I am quite happy about that!
As a kid vacations meant road trips. My family only traveled by car. In fact the first time I was on a plane I was in my 20s and it was my college graduation trip to Chicago. One of my fondest memories is driving from California to see my family in Texas. My parents and I were in one minivan, while my aunt, uncle, and cousins were in their minivan. We caravan'd from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon to New Mexico to Houston, Texas. You would think that trip would mean a break from driving, but then our family in Houston planned an adventure to New Orleans. So on the road we went for a day trip to a city that I remembered was very pretty and ungodly humid.

Oblivious Birthday Gratitude Day 3. Now I know it looks like I'm repeating from day 2. Yes these are BBC girls, however I am thankful for the girl in the middle in red because as I post this we are on her celebrating the end of her reign as a single lady. On Oblivious Birthday Gratitude Day 3 I am thankful for VDG and her hen party. I am keeping this short and sweet because there are drinks to be drunk and fun to be had.
On Oblivious Birthday Gratitude Day 2 I am thankful for the people in this picture. We affectionately call each other the Bougie Bitch Clique or BBC for short. These are my ride or die folks which are a mixture of elementary school, high school, and college friends.
I miss the days of driving up from Irvine and strolling right into the Brockton apartment that several of them lived in and feeling like I was at home. I practically was since I had a key to the place. There have been ups and downs as there are with any group of friends, but this is my family and I can't see life without them. I love you all. Thank you for being a part of my life. September is my birthday month. I've been trying to think of ways to celebrate this year. The past year has been quite a doozy in both good times and not so good times. I'm going to attempt to post once a day to show my gratitude for being on this earth. Back in the livejournal/xanga days posting once a day was easy. Now it feels a bit daunting. But I'm up for the challenge! On Oblivious Birthday Gratitude Day 1 I am thankful for my internet home. This space has transitioned from an idea to a tumblr to my own dot com. Thank you to everyone who keeps up with all the obliviousness. In planning out for this month be prepared for more obliviousness, mushy posts about friends and family, and fangirl posts about things that get me through the day. September also marks the one year anniversary of Color Your Troubles Away! Last September I started Color Your Troubles Away as a way to destress & spend time with friends. Celebrate Color Your Troubles Away one year anniversary with me on Thursday, September 22nd! RSVP here: Color Your Troubles Away: Super September

Last night was the Comedy Comedy Fest kick off event at Seoul Sausage. It also happened to be the birthdays of two Asian Americans in entertainment, Daniel Dae Kim and M. Night Shyamalan. Tsismis Coucil (Eseel &I) knows how to throw the best birthday parties for your imaginary bffs. There will be balloons. There will be streamers. There will be big heads on sticks that you will want to take pictures with because why not?!
There was cake. So much cake. SO MUCH DELICIOUS CAKE.
Many thanks to Chef Dara Yu for providing the cupcakes. They were SO GOOD. Why were they good? Well a) they were bite size, so you didn't feel like you were gorging yourself, b) they were bite size so you could eat the equivalent of one whole cupcake but not feel THAT bad because they were mini, and c) they were bite size and super delicious and I may or may not have done A and B. It wouldn't be a birthday party without a sheet cake. Thank you to Vons for holding it down on the traditional birthday cake end. The party also was the reveal of the new Comedy Comedy Fest mascot, "Marcel the Piñata." They had fun with DDK and M. Night. They're available for pictures at Comedy Comedy Fest shows. Marcel is looking forward to some laughs!
What's a birthday party without blowing out some candles DDK & M. Night were there in spirit (and in big head form) as Jenny Yang, (producer of Comedy Comedy Fest), and the Comedy Comedy Fest leadership team blew out the birthday candles on their behalf.
Rad moments made by some rad folks. Huzzahs and thank yous all around for everyone who helped out and attended the kick off party!

August also happens to be our anniversary month! That's right. Mike and I got married in August and we want to celebrate with our family and friends at Disco Manila. Both of our parents are fans of disco. Pops Oblivious would share stories about his time in the Philippines, dancing the night away to VST. I'm quite excited for this show. It's going to be an awesome time. Plus it's a part of Grand Performances. I love this series. It isn't a summer in Los Angeles without a concert in California Plaza!
And lastly SAVE THE DATE! FPAC 25 is coming! Samu't Sari. October 8th, 2016 at Echo Park Lake.
Dear lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place,
Apparently you chose to ignore the street sign. It said "No Left Turn. 7-9am, 4-6pm. Except Sat & Sun. Transit Bus Exempt." Lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place. It seems like you did not appreciate my friendly honks. When I noticed you were trying to turn left I did the friendly "beep!" which I did to remind you that you can't turn left. Instead of the friendly wave you used your left hand to point at the sign. A sign which reads: "No Left Turn. 7-9am, 4-6pm. Except Sat & Sun. Transit Bus Exempt." So I beeped again. Another friendly "beep" which you responded by waving me off, essentially telling me to go around. Lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place, perhaps you thought this sign did not apply to you. Perhaps you thought your Nissan Z automobile was a transit bus. Indeed your sports car is not a Metro bus. It is a car. A car that is supposed to abide by street signs. As someone who was born and raised in Los Angeles County, specifically the San Fernando Valley, your obvious indiscretion and flat out choice to ignore the sign made me upset. So I honked my horn one more time. It was not friendly honk but a longer BEEEEEPPPP. And that did not dissuade you. Because Lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place, you are a special type of Hancock Park Asshole who gives no fucks and doesn't care about the commuters behind you. To which my San Fernando Valley, 818 born & bred self could not help it as I lowered my window and yelled, "IT'S NOT 6 O'CLOCK!" I did not call you a bitch. Or a cunt. Or a privileged piece of shit that you are. I simply pointed out the time and the fact that you were not legally supposed to turn left because the sign, Lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place said, "No Left Turn. 7-9am, 4-6pm. Except Sat & Sun. Transit Bus Exempt." So Lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place in your Nissan Z. I hope you got to wherever you needed to go. Perhaps it is an empty home because your husband left you for a much younger version of you. Perhaps it is a full home of people that you can't stand. I don't know. But I do know this Lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place, I now understand why my immigrant mother would get irately angry at privileged assholes who constantly tried to cut her down and tell her she was wrong when she was simply pointing out the truth. So Lady who yelled fuck you to me on 6th and McCadden Place. You enjoy your Hancock Park Privilege. There will always be people like me in their cars honking and yelling at you for pointing out you SHOULDN'T BE FUCKING TURNING LEFT ON MCCADDEN PLACE BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 4-6PM. Go fuck yourself, Another Los Angeles Commuter who is sick of your shit. My cousin Vince is the bestest. He's my go to guy for design jobs, not just because he's family, but because he's creative and always kicks ass with my random requests. He designed the new This Filipino American Life logo, which I absolutely love. Anyone who loves Philippine dried mangoes knows this packaging and it's totally the perfect way to combine coloring and This Filipino American Life! These sheets will be at #ColorYourTroublesAway | July Jam Thursday, July 28th, 7-9pm POT Lobby Bar @ The Line Hotel Come by & color with us!
Episode 3 of This Filipino American Life is now up! On this episode we talk Filipino American gangs in Southern California. Joe, Ryan, and I talk about our experiences with that culture and we talk to Dave, a FilAm who grew up in that lifestyle. We learned a lot on this episode and we probably could have talked to Dave for a lot longer!
