Oblivious meets Marcela Ramirez

I met Marcela when I was doing an internship at CalPolyPomona in 2007-2008. We were both in the early stages of our student affairs careers. The beauty of this field is that you will run into someone you met when you were a "baby" professional at various conferences and you can still feel the same vibe that you did with them when your first met them! Marcela's path in higher ed is quite inspiring. As a PhD student she was also the Founding Director of the Middle Eastern Student Center at the University of California, Riverside. This center is the first of it's kind in the UC system and in California. Seeing her updates on Facebook, I would wonder how does she manage grad school life, work, and have fun? She somehow does it and does it well! For more a more detailed bio on Marcela you can check out her about.me. Follow Marcela on twitter @marcelaspeaks. You can also follow her UC Regents adventures on Marcela Ramirez - UC Student Regent Designate. I love her hashtag #RegencyRealness. She spits truth!

#SurvivorLoveLetter

Last year Tani Ikeda, former Oblivious Interview and rad person all around, created a campaign that publicly celebrated rape survivors. In a time where many people preach self love #SurvivorLoveLetter embodies this practice from a voice that has been silenced by sexual violence in the past. Tani continued to post letters that were submitted to the SurvivorLoveLetter tumblr. In her own words she writes, "Each time I posted a letter it felt like sending out a small prayer in the hopes that someone would read it at just the right moment and feel seen."

Tani took this on throughout the year and I can see how the process could be emotionally draining. There are not enough salutes to give her continuing this project. This year I encourage you to share a #SurvivorLoveLetter. Let your sisters and brothers know that you believe them, that you cherish them, and that you stand with them. On Valentine's Day at 9am PST use the hashtag #survivorloveletter on twitter & instagram. Submit your own #survivorloveletter to :

Support Oblivious Nerd Girl

Oblivious Nerd Girl is a labor of love. It has grown from humble beginnings on tumblr to our own dot com; to expanding from personal essays to Oblivious Interviews and producing Color Your Troubles Away and Lessons From Lola.

I learned about Patreon through Faith Choyce, a previous Oblivious Interview! The idea of getting support from folks who are interested in what I put out there intrigued me, so I'm testing the waters with a my own Patreon page! You can support me for as little ad $1 a month or up to $50 a month. And I will give you mentions, plugs, and even monthly personalized illustrated post cards. You will be a part of the Oblivious Nerd Girl family and help us produce more podcasts and curate Color Your Troubles Away events. The big bad plan for the future is to create coloring sheets that will be compiled into a Color Your Troubles Away coloring book! With your patronage (see what I did there!) all these awesome things will come to fruition!

And even if you can't contribute, I completely understand. I still appreciate you and your support!

Snail Mail Revival

I recently joined the Letter Writers Alliance as a way to motivate me to write more letters! I love snail mail and the art of letter writing. My east coast twin/team gaross homie Hanalei and I have been writing letters to each other for I think ten years. TEN  YEARS. Wow typing that shocks me. Granted I'm not prolific with my letters. Sometimes years it was like one letter a year. I am trying to up my game with this letter writing business!

As a kid I had a pen pal through a program that Sanrio put together. She was from Hawaii and we wrote to each other from 4th grade to high school. Suffice it to say, I am a fan of letter writing and am eager to get back into it!

The Virgo planner in me has calendared and scheduled who I'll be sending random tidbits through the post office. It's fun to figure out what to say to someone who probably knows about my life through Facebook or Instagram. Letter writing also forces me to practice my handwriting and brush letttering which is helpful since I've taken on several hand/brush lettering challenges on instagram this month.

If you want snail mail feel free to email me your address and I'll try my best to drop a note in the mailbox to you! Pen pals of the world unite!

Oblivious meets Audrey Kuo

Audrey is one of my favorite cat people. I am always envious of cat people because I am deathly allergic to cats and cannot have one. I would be the bestest cat lady too. Audrey also is an amazing bread maker. They make awesome breads. If I had a bajillion dollars I would have a bakery in my home. I would have my own bread maker on staff. It would be carbolicious.

When Audrey isn't baking bread or herding cats. Audrey is also a writer who writes at audreykuo.wordpress.com. Audrey is also a community organizer who can help you raise money if your organization needs money. Besides baking bread and writing, Audrey also has a talent for holding animals, both baby animals and adult animals. That is a super awesome talent as well.

Audrey also happens to be the new Executive Director for API Equality-LA. I was so excited to see this press release in my inbox yesterday. I can't wait for all the dope and exciting things Audrey will do at API Equality!

Oblivious meets Audrey Kuo

Congrats to my favorite bread maker @foodandlola. Was so stoked to see this email this evening!!!!
