As I got ready for work today I anxiously awaited the Supreme Court rulings on DOMA and Prop 8. I was hopeful, but trying to brace myself for the worst. Instead, I was a sack of tears. When the news announced that DOMA had been deemed unconstitutional and that the Lower Court ruling for Prop 8 would stand, I simply lost it. All of the moisturizer that was on my face is probably gone now because of my cry baby behavior. I don't care. It's history and it's amazing and it's seriously so awesome. Buzzfeed articles galore on this subject. It makes my heart happy! Texas State Senator Wendy Davis aka a BAMF And Texas State Senator Wendy Davis prevails with her epic filibuster that preserved women's rights. Jezebel wins with this celebratory GIF article. June 26th will go down as a crazy day in US History. Little Mikey I was already on an emotional high because early in the morning, at almost quarter to 1am, my super rad nephew Michael Riley was born! I am so happy for my cousins Vince and Patty. I can't wait to squeeze Little Mikey's cheeks. I plan on spoiling this munchkin with lots of Dodgers, Lakers, and Disney gear. Witnessing history. Little Mikey finally making his appearance. So many FEELS! June 26th. You are an awesome day!

During the academic year I help out with Sessions LA as their college counselor. Support Sessions LA by having a meal at The Park's Finest tonight. A portion of the profits supports the music program that's housed at SIPA. Enjoy a yummy meal and some rad tunes picked by the Sessions LA family. Strawberry Farm Boy Mike will be spinning records tonight at 7pm. I'll be there writing stuff and possibly playing Animal Crossing before or after I have a delicious meal of elote, rice, and either ribs or coco beef. Whenever Strawberry Farm Boy and I go to a Dodger game it feels like home. Last night's game was Filipino Heritage Night. Filipino American Network - Los Angeles (FAN LA) put together a group in the All You Can Eat section in Right Pavilion. It's only Strawberry Farm Boy and I's 2nd game of the year, but it was a good one. Valley Twin Joe joined us for the festivities. There were hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, and peanuts consumed. The best part of the AYCE section is that I don't have to worry about spending more money on food since it's a part of the ticket. Bench seating can get precarious at times, but as long as you are friendly with your neighbor the game is all good. The ticket also came with a Filipino Heritage Night t-shirt. It was a simple design on a white t-shirt. I think this is my 4th Filipino Heritage Night shirt! Pops wasn't that big a baseball fan, but he is a LA sports fan, so we would watch Dodger baseball occasionally on tv. My favorite childhood memory is Kirk Gibson's home run in 1988. It was the perfect sports year. The Lakers were NBA champs. The Dodgers were about to clinch it. The game was tied up 1-1 against the SF Giants. The feeling that we'd lose began to creep up on me. But the homie Daniel, ever the community organizer, did a familiar chant that we've used in JFAV marches. As he spotted us he chanted, "MABU MABU MABU-U" And Strawberry Farm Boy, Valley Twin Joe, and I instantly responded, "HAY HAY HAY!" After the chant the Dodgers scored. The momentum changed. We chanted some more. The other Filipinos around us got into it too. Dodgers scored 2 runs to put the game up 3-1. This all happened in the 8th inning. Belasario was able to close it out Randy Newman's "I Love LA" played through Chavez Ravine. A great day for Dodger Baseball indeed! Welcome to the new Oblivious Nerd Girl website. Since I started Oblivious Nerd Girl Hood Chronicles this past February I've been thinking of ways to update things around my internet house. Tumblr was a great first home, but now I've moved into my own "dot com." The old tumblr will still be up. And if I can figure out how to integrate tumblr into weebly maybe I can add the old posts on here! Until then my "The Beginning" page explains the Oblivious Nerd Girl tumblr early days.
When I first began this journey "hoodnerdgirl" felt like the proper description of what I wanted to write about. I am a nerd girl from the hood. But as the stories progressed I realized that wasn't the most accurate description of who I am. I began to move from "hoodnerdgirl" to "Oblivious Nerd Girl" and now we are here on the Oblivious Nerd Girl 2.0. Building this website reminded me that I have had some kind of home on the internet since I was in high school. Best Friend Jen pointed out that the color scheme reminded her of my high school website. I used an 8bit version of teal on some angelfire or geocities website with really awful html coding. It is out there somewhere with lots of links to random things. If I can find it that may be a story in itself! What's to come on Oblivious Nerd Girl 2.0? More stories from my Oblivious Nerd Girl childhood. More stories about my Oblivious Nerd Girl life now. I'm in the early stages of a feature component where I talk to folks who went to St. Genevieve with me and catch up on all the awesome and rad things they are doing now. Thank you for reading these stories and for supporting Oblivious Nerd Girl. Enjoy Oblivious Nerd Girl 2.0! |
