First Five Words: Nostalgia. Funny. National Film Society Why these five words? Why see this movie?: Full disclosure I was a Kickstarter backer of this project. I have also been a fan of the National Film Society for quite some time. Their Youtube Channel is hliarious. When I had the time I would try to check out their live streams and participate with quirky questions. I love how this film brings up the 80s nostalgia for folks who loved all those Awesome Asian Bad Guys in 80s movies. I will admit I was one of those kids who rooted for them win. Sorry Daniel-san, I wanted Yuji Okumoto to totally kick your ass in Karate Kid 2. Yes he was the Asian equivalent of "Johnny Sweep The Leg," but he looked like kids I grew up with. Also in later years that asshole kid turned into Johnny Tsunami's sorta mean dad who learns to relax by the end of the movie. Question. Did anyone else wonder how a JA dude and a white lady end up having a Filipino kid? That always confused me about Johnny Tsunami. And yes I know I just revealed that I have seen Johnny Tsunami. It was a decent Disney Film people! But back to Awesome Asian Bad Guys. If you loved to watch those villains in the 80s kick ass this film is for you. First Five Words: Family. Triumph. Heartbreaking. Second Chances Why these five words? Why see this movie?: The story of Kosal Khiev was heartbreaking for me. Seeing how the art of spoken word allowed him to move beyond his street life affiliations is a sight to see. The film reminded me how art can save folks. His words are powerful as he speaks of being deported back to Cambodia, a country he did not know, after serving time in the prison systems of California. Khiev's performance at the cultural aspect of the 2012 London Olympics give the audience a sense of triumph for him. He has risen above his trials and tribulations. Watching his journey and hearing his spoken word is a testament to the human spirit. Saturday, May 03 5:15 PM Directors Guild of America 2

Why these five words? Why see this movie?: I am a sucker for anything musical, so this film was right up my alley. It's the classic story of kids trying to make it in theater, only set in China. Instead of a kid from the Midwest making in a big city, it's a kid from a tiny village trying to make it. The idea of "making it" is totally universal and watching these kids try and make it is enjoyable. Also if you liked the tv show Fame or the musical Fame, you'll get a kick out of the Chinese adaption. |
