Everything Before Us
Thursday, April 23rd, 7pm, Aratani This year Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival kicks off with EVERYTHING BEFORE US, a feature film by the folks behind Wong Fu productions. EVERYTHING BEFORE US takes place in a world where life is dependent on your relationship score. What’s a relationship score? Imagine your credit score but instead of your purchases and payments impacting your life, it’s all your previous relationships. Bad break up? Your life could literally be over. It’s an interesting premise that’s entertaining to see play out. Click on the picture for more info on the film and buy tickets! It's Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival time! It's the big 3-1. I'm quite excited for this year's festival.
Starting on Monday I'll be posting my film festival recommendations! Click on the picture for more info! Last night I hosted my second screening for Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Jeepney is a documentary that shares the story of a popular mode of transportation in the Philippines. The documentary is beautifully shot and covers the artistry into crafting the Jeepneys as well as the political and social implications tied to the vehicle. Esy Casey, the films director, and Sarah Friedland, the films producer were on hand for a short q & a. It was great to hear their experiences making the film. I'm glad I got to host this film since I am partial to the story. When Strawberry Farm Boy and I got married, the Pilipnio Workers Center Jeepney was our wedding ride. We opted for something different and the Jeepney seemed to fit our vintage vibe. PWC normally hosts Jeepney tours of Historic-Filipinotown. I believe the tours are on hold for now since the Jeepney is in need of some repairs. When they are up and running it's definitely a cool thing to do in the neighborhood! If you missed the screening but want to check out the screening you are in luck! There will be an encore presentation of the film this Friday. Check it out!

Ticket and Film Info: The Cotabato Sessions This trailer is from CAAM Film Festival that recently past. First Five Words: Justice for the Delano Manongs
Why these five words? Why see this movie?: Philip Vera Cruz. Larry Itliong. Benjamin Gines. Pete Velasco. Names that have been practically erased from the United Farm Worker history. Instead the world knows of Cesar Chavez, his wife Helen, and Dolores Huerta. Delano Manongs highlights the men who have been overlooked by traditional history books. Philippine Cinema will be highlighted at this years festival with five films that show the diversity coming from the Philippines. These films are all definitely worth checking out! Blue Bustamante Sunday, May 04 12:00 PM CGV Cinemas 2 A throwback to the time where Power Rangers were THE thing. An OFW story with enough heart to make you go aww shucks, but not the drama of the classic OFW film Anak staring Vilma Santos. Nothing will beat that film in my eyes. Devotion Tuesday, May 06 7:00 PM CGV Cinemas 3 Catholicism meets Philippine folklore makes for a fascinating film. Also I will be hosting this film, so if you want o see Oblivious Nerd Girl in person, check this film out! Kabisera Wednesday, May 07 7:00 PM CGV Cinemas 2 This film is for fans of film noir movies and Breaking Bad. The lead in the movie reminds me of that uncle who was always so nice, but you wouldn't want to get on his bad side. Rekorder Saturday, May 03 7:30 PM Directors Guild of America 2 The cultural commentary on piracy, social media, and how folks have become numb to witnessing things is played well in this film. Shift Saturday, May 03 9:30 PM CGV Cinemas 2 What happens when a girl befriends a boy when they work at a Call Center? Laughs, fun times, and love in all the wrong places. Because she falls in love with him. And then he falls in love with another boy. Ticket and Info: National Spotlight: Philippine Cinema
First Five Words: Nostalgia. Funny. National Film Society Why these five words? Why see this movie?: Full disclosure I was a Kickstarter backer of this project. I have also been a fan of the National Film Society for quite some time. Their Youtube Channel is hliarious. When I had the time I would try to check out their live streams and participate with quirky questions. I love how this film brings up the 80s nostalgia for folks who loved all those Awesome Asian Bad Guys in 80s movies. I will admit I was one of those kids who rooted for them win. Sorry Daniel-san, I wanted Yuji Okumoto to totally kick your ass in Karate Kid 2. Yes he was the Asian equivalent of "Johnny Sweep The Leg," but he looked like kids I grew up with. Also in later years that asshole kid turned into Johnny Tsunami's sorta mean dad who learns to relax by the end of the movie. Question. Did anyone else wonder how a JA dude and a white lady end up having a Filipino kid? That always confused me about Johnny Tsunami. And yes I know I just revealed that I have seen Johnny Tsunami. It was a decent Disney Film people! But back to Awesome Asian Bad Guys. If you loved to watch those villains in the 80s kick ass this film is for you. Saturday, May 03 9:45 PM Directors Guild of America 1
Friday, May 09 9:45 PM Tateuchi Democracy Forum Ticket and Film Info: Awesome Asian Bad Guys First Five Words: Family. Triumph. Heartbreaking. Second Chances Why these five words? Why see this movie?: The story of Kosal Khiev was heartbreaking for me. Seeing how the art of spoken word allowed him to move beyond his street life affiliations is a sight to see. The film reminded me how art can save folks. His words are powerful as he speaks of being deported back to Cambodia, a country he did not know, after serving time in the prison systems of California. Khiev's performance at the cultural aspect of the 2012 London Olympics give the audience a sense of triumph for him. He has risen above his trials and tribulations. Watching his journey and hearing his spoken word is a testament to the human spirit. Saturday, May 03 5:15 PM Directors Guild of America 2
